So what are you supposed to do?  How do you get and keep clients in a tough economic environment when it feels like outside forces are stacking the deck against you?

    While it's true we have almost 10% unemployment here in the U.S. and the bureaucrats in Increase Sale Coach Cheryl A. ClausenWashington are telling us it could stay... it's also true that 90% of the working population has jobs.  Those people with jobs spend money in spite of their worries.  Just think.

    While most retailers saw their sales fall... Wal-Mart experienced sales growth.  

  Manufacturing slightly increased their inventories, up 0.1% (April 2010), because of the slight increase in demand (0.9%).  

    These facts demonstrate the reality that both consumers and businesses are spending money.  

    It's just that both consumers and businesses are much more careful about what they spend their money on.  


Remember When . . .

    In the good old days you could hang your shingle and get plenty of clients knocking on your door... There was a time when you could mimic the competition and get at least a few clients... Unfortunately for you and me, those times are GONE.  There is no lazy man's way to instant riches.

    Selling any type of service in any service industry is always a complex high-value sale... and that's exactly why the typical sales techniques taught in most sales training and sales programs don't work.  In fact, those sales techniques cause you to burn your bridges and ruin your chances of working with the people you try them on.

Amazing Secret Revealed by Russian Scientist

    In 1901 Russian Psychologist Ivan Pavlov made a discovery that literally saved my butt.  I went searching for the secret to selling a service because like most start-up service businesses the sales techniques I was using weren't paying the bills.  What I discovered instantly made getting clients as easy as ABC...it was like turning on a spigot.  Once I developed ways to apply this knowledge...I literally had to stop making sales appointments because I had too much work and...  I came to realize this is the underlying secret to making all the money you want.  As you may recall from your early science classes, this is the guy who discovered he could make a dog salivate just by ringing a bell.  He called this phenomenon "Conditioned Reflex".

    By the time you reach adulthood you've had countless experiences with sales people.  As a result of all these experiences these sales people  -- they've trained you on how to spot a "sales person".  The sales people from your past have shown you the behaviors you can expect from a "sales person". Consequently, whenever someone acts like a "sales person" those behaviors trigger a "conditioned reflex" in you... just like Pavlov's dogs.

    Unlike Pavlov's dogs, when a sales person rings your bell you don't salivate in tail wagging anticipation.  No way.  The "conditioned reflex" those sales behaviors trigger in you are defensive... they kind of make your hair stand on end... you might feel like you need to choke back a gutteral growl boiling up your throat just waiting to escape... 
  • you become skeptical
  • you may even lie to the sales person to protect yourself from getting talked into something
  • you do whatever it takes to get rid of the sales person because you don't like being sold

   Funny things is... you love to buy.  That is... when it's your idea.  The whole point of sales training is to teach you how to act like a sales person.  No wonder it doesn't work for people trying to sell a service.  No wonder the typical sales training spells disaster for anyone who needs to build a life-long relationship with their clients.  

    Getting clients is hard enough.  When you earn a client you sure as heck want to make certain you keep that client as long as humanly possible.  Building relationships with both your prospects and your clients is the key to buckets of profits because the relationships you form with your prospects and clients make it easy for them to trust you.  

    Why is trust so important?  Gaining the trust of your prospects and clients is critical because prospects and clients who trust you --
  1. buy sooner 
  2. spend more when they buy 
  3. buy more often  

    These 3 simple results from trust ramp up your business profits in a snap.  Better yet, it makes it 1-2-3 easy to leverage each and every prospect.  If your business is based on a continual scramble for new clients you have an unsustainable business model.  No matter how enthusiastic you are now... 5-10-15 years from now you will burn out... and at that point you will have almost nothing to show for all that hardwork, grit, and determination.      


    Golfing legend Bobby Jones is credited with saying the game of golf is won or lost in the 5 inch space between your ears.  The same is true when it comes to selling your services.  It isn't a matter of motivation.  Instead it's a matter of seeing what you are looking at and treating potential clients with respect.

    Don't let your perception blindside you.  Once you're shown what to look for... and what to listen for it's easy.  All of a sudden getting new clients is like shooting fish in a barrel.  It won't take hard work to keep the clients you've worked so hard to get either because you'll be singing in the same choir.  Getting and keeping clients isn't much more challenging than making a new friend.  You can do that... you've been doing that your entire life.
