Don’t Let Gender be YOUR Hangup

Yes, you may be a women selling in a male dominated world. Don’t let that intimidate you. In fact, this is really a fantastic opportunity for you.

In general, there are two huge sales advantages that you have as a female sales professional. You’re a better listener than your male counterparts. You’re also more empathetic, and better able to read and understand what the prospect is telling you beyond their words.

Your attitude has a lot to do with your sales success. The attitudes you harbor about sales and being a woman come out in your behaviors. Those behaviors produce the results you get.

Yippee! That means your results are entirely within your control. No matter what your experience today you can succeed from hence forth. First, you need to ferret out those attitudes that are getting in your way. As a child you were told:

• not to speak to strangers
• not to speak unless spoken to
• not to go where you’re not wanted

Those attitudes are so ingrained in who you are, and what you think you don’t even realize they’re there. However, now that you realize how dangerous they are you can be on the lookout for them. They will pop up unexpectedly in your automatic response to different situations.

Do you find when you pick up the phone to call a prospect or client that your heart starts pounding, your stomach starts doing back flips, and your tongue is hopelessly wrapped around your teeth? At those moments when you’re experiencing these unpleasant automatic responses ask yourself:

• What is the worst thing that could possibly happen if I take this action?
• If the worst thing I can possibly think of happening did in fact happen, could I live with the consequences?
• What is the absolute best thing that could happen if I took this action?
• Would the reward of the best thing outweigh the consequences of the worst thing?

The actions you take or fear taking demonstrate the attitudes hidden within you. However, as an adult professional woman you can now logically challenge those beliefs. This gives you back the power to control your outcomes.

Now that you’re armed with the right attitudes you can combine your right attitudes with your skills and knowledge and become the professional you deserve to be. Knowledge comes from knowing what to do, and skills come from knowing how to do it. Back this all up with:

• self-leadership
• commitment to taking action
• and the focus and clarity gained from a clear plan for success

And you are on a path to the top that can’t be stopped.

The more clarity you have about the alignment of your actions with your objectives the better your results. The more committed you are to your success backed by your beliefs the better your results. And the better your results the more momentum you have to build on those results.
